The Client
On November 19, 2001 President Bush signed into law the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA), which among other things established a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) within the Department of Transportation. The ultimate goal of theTSA is to create a secure atmosphere for airline passengers while ensuring the freedom of movement for people.
The Challenge
The TSA was tasked to train 30,000 baggage screeners across 400 airports nationwide within 6 months, while maintaining consistent curriculum, testing, and student records. This drove the need to build and deploy a new safety-critical training application in eight weeks to deploy nationwide. The application had to meet stringent government security requirements, while staying within strict budget constraints.
The Solution
Synapptix assembled a team of over 300 IT resources, including a highly specialized development team focused on designing an appropriate security solution, taking into consideration both its technical and legal aspects. The team used Appsware and Apriva application development tools, RIM peripherals, and intelligent middleware to build a highly secure, web-based training application.
The Benefits
The project was completed on time and on budget, including the training of 1,900 users in the field. All on-duty TSA baggage handlers were fully trained and certified. The design and deployment strategy of the application allows for new users to be trained quickly and cost-effectively.
